The Town of Long Eaton

Long EatonLong Eaton is a small town six miles from the centre of Nottingham and lies on the banks of the River Trent. The town dates back to the 7th century and its namecomes from an Anglo-Saxon phrase meaning,
‘town by the water’.

The town prospered in the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, becoming a centre for lacemaking and quarrying. The development of both the railways and the Erewash Canal brought a boom period and by the 1900s its flourishing lace trade was using an estimated 1,500 machines. The Palladian mansion Long Eaton Hall was built by Joseph Pickford of Derby, and later became the town hall.

Long EatonLong Eaton is a busy, thriving town with plenty of activities going on all year round. There’s a regular market and a variety of high street shops and stores, pubs and restaurants in the compact town centre, which is pedestrianised and has everything within easy reach.

Just outside the town there’s an endless choice of attractions where you can enjoy great days out. Elvaston Castle Country Park has lovely wooded walks and is around four miles west of Long Eaton. Attenborough Nature Centre is just two miles down the road and is a breathtaking haven for wildlife. A short distance away is Trent Lock where the Erewash Canal joins the River Trent, an extremely popular spot for sailing, boating and relaxing canalside walks.

If you’re a sports lover, you’re spoilt for choice in Long Eaton. West Park Leisure Centre has a swimming pool, saunas, solariums, sunbeds, sports halls and a licensed bar. The town also has its own cricket club, football club and a golf club at nearby Trent Lock.

The train station is only 5 minutes away with direct links to Nottingham City centre and London.
